The Mizuhanome System is a cutting-edge technology that lets people explore one of the most mysterious realms-the human mind. Detectives from the special police unit Kura use "cognition particles," traces left behind by criminals at crime scenes, to materialize a suspect's subconscious as a surreal stream of thoughts in a virtual space. This psychological landscape, called an "id well," must be navigated to uncover the culprit's identity. But not everyone can enter an id well-only those who have killed someone. Former detective Akihito Narihisago, known as "Sakaido" inside these wells, is one such person. Once a respected officer, his life took a tragic turn, leaving him on the wrong side of the law. Despite being imprisoned, Narihisago still aids Kura in their investigations. His sharp detective skills remain invaluable, but as he delves deeper, he begins to realize these seemingly unrelated murders hint at something far darker beneath the surface.
