The Rose of Versailles

To strengthen ties between their nations, the Empress of Austria arranges for her daughter, the charming but pampered Marie Antoinette, to marry France’s crown prince, Louis XVI. When Antoinette arrives at Versailles, she meets Oscar Francois de Jarjayes, the dashing Captain of the Royal Guards-only to discover that the "young man" is actually a woman. Oscar, the youngest daughter of a noble family with no male heir, was raised as a boy to uphold her family’s military tradition. Feeling stifled by the strict expectations of her new royal role and eager for friendship, Antoinette quickly befriends the intriguing Oscar. But as the naive young queen carelessly misuses her power, Oscar finds herself torn between her duty to the royal family and her growing awareness of the suffering common people. Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, "Versailles no Bara" follows the struggles of these two women, both trapped by the weight of familial duty. Forced to suppress their true selves, they nonetheless carve their names into history.
