In the near future, Akira Mizutame, a talented but struggling young scientist, has hit a rough patch after his earlier success with Salt, a helpful household robot. After a string of failures, a friend jokingly suggests he could improve his personal life by inventing a girlfriend. Taking the idea seriously, Akira creates an artificial partner named "No. 0," who soon becomes his real companion. As No. 0 grapples with her programmed emotions and her own growing feelings, she faces an inner struggle.
