Many years ago, a young woman named Unai-Otome lived in the village of Ikuta. Her beauty drew the affection of two suitors, both deeply in love with her. Unable to choose between them, she took her own life in despair. Yet even death brought her no peace. Decades later, a pilgrim passing her grave encounters a beautiful young woman, and her tragic tale resurfaces. Inspired by a classic Noh play, the film reflects Kawamoto’s skill in portraying the poignant absurdity of human existence.
