On the small colony world of Carmine, young women called Songstresses carry the inherited memories of their predecessors, using this knowledge to aid people struggling under the oppressive rule of the interplanetary league. Sixteen-year-old Bellin Ajelli, newly awakened as a Songstress, begins a sacred pilgrimage across the planet.
