The year is 2045. After the Global Simultaneous Default-a catastrophic economic collapse that affected every nation-and the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, the world has descended into the Sustainable War, a conflict designed to drag on endlessly. In this near future, the decline hasn’t yet reached a point where people feel the immediate threat of A.I. to humanity’s survival. To counter cybercrimes committed by the Posthumans, a newly emerged type of human, Public Security Section 9-led by the fully cybernetic Kusanagi Motoko-arrives in Tokyo, now a war-torn ruin. They encounter a refugee faction calling itself "N" and a hostile American Special Forces unit. With the danger of nuclear war triggered by a hijacked submarine looming, the three-way struggle between Section 9, the Americans, and the Posthumans escalates.
