In the coastal village of Hinashi Town, Kai Ashimoto's grandfather is among those who believe in the old legend of mermaids lurking near Merfolk Island-creatures said to prey on humans. Music is a taboo subject in the Ashimoto household, blamed for drawing merfolk and causing the death of Kai's grandmother. Still, Kai finds comfort in creating looped beats on his laptop and sharing them online. Despite his quiet, withdrawn nature, Kai catches the attention of two lively classmates, Kunio and Yuuho Ebina, who stumble upon one of his videos. They invite him to join their rock band, but Kai shows little interest. Even so, he reluctantly agrees to join them for a practice session on Merfolk Island, where he sees something impossible. That night, as Kai works on music in his room, a mermaid appears-drawn by the sound. She spins and smiles along to his stereo, revealing herself as Lu. Kai learns surprising things about her: she can control water, her legs form when music plays, and most importantly, she’s not a monster but a kind-hearted being who just wants to be liked. As their friendship grows, Kai and Lu begin to break free from their own fears and the unspoken rules that have silenced Hinashi Town for years.
