Long ago, numerous magical "Artifacts" were stolen and lost across the world. Falling into the wrong hands, they brought misfortune to those who misused their power. The Hoshisato family, magicians with a unique connection to the Artifacts, has made it their duty to recover them. Kana "Hatena" Hoshisato, despite her lack of experience, wants to help her parents, Mamoru and Maeve, in their mission and works hard to improve. When her childhood friend Makoto Shiranui arrives at their mansion to study magic under her father-fulfilling a promise they made years ago-Hatena is thrilled to reunite. But her excitement turns to bitter disappointment when she discovers that the friend she always thought was a girl is actually a boy. Soon, Makoto learns the truth about the Artifacts and the Hoshisatos' real identities as magicians. Undeterred, he remains committed to his goals: to master magic, to soothe the pain of those around him, and above all, to become someone deserving of standing by Hatena's side.
