Hotaru Hinase is sixteen and has never been in love. She's content with her life, surrounded by friends and family, and doesn't see romance as something meant for her-she doesn’t even really understand it. One day, while out with a friend, she sees her classmate Hananoi going through a painful breakup. Later, she finds him sitting alone in the snow and offers him her umbrella. To her shock, the next day at school, he confesses his feelings for her. Hotaru turns him down, but Hananoi refuses to give up. He goes out of his way to win her over, changing his appearance and even searching the snow for a hairpin she lost. Though she doesn’t feel the same way, Hotaru decides to give dating a try, hoping that spending time with him might teach her how to love. As they grow closer, she slowly learns what it means to be in a relationship, trying to return the small acts of kindness Hananoi keeps showing her.
