In the 20th century, a great war raged between humans and monsters. Now, the monsters hold power over the world, ruling through fear while remaining mostly hidden from sight. A boy named Bokka reflects on the past, curious about the fate of the Meros Warriors-heroes who once fought valiantly against the demons. When he encounters Kurofune, he learns of the Meros' power and the I-bar machines they ride into battle. Only warriors can perceive the Melody of Oblivion, a spectral girl imprisoned in secrecy, destined to become humanity's savior. During a clash between Kurofune and a demon, Bokka makes an impossible discovery-he can hear the melody too. As he travels, he meets allies, enemies, and agents of the monsters, uncovering the full potential of his newfound abilities. Driven by hope, he fights to rescue the Melody of Oblivion and restore a world that has lost its once-beautiful song.
