Coco, the daughter of a simple dressmaker, has always been drawn to magic and the secretive witches who practice it, even though they go to great lengths to keep their craft hidden. One day, she seizes an opportunity to secretly observe the skilled witch Qifrey and discovers that her beloved childhood picture book was actually a cleverly disguised spellbook. Thrilled by this revelation, she eagerly tries out the magic inside. But when one of her spells goes wrong and nearly destroys her home, Qifrey steps in to save her. Recognizing her potential, he takes her on as his apprentice-not just out of kindness, but because she might be his first real clue in tracking down the Brimmed Caps, a rogue group of witches who dabble in forbidden body-altering magic and recklessly spread enchanted objects among ordinary people. Before Coco and Qifrey can face this threat, however, she must first hone her magical abilities and find a way to fit in with his other apprentices.
