Hanamichi Sakuragi is known for his short temper, towering height, and bright red hair. When he starts at Shohoku High, he’s determined to finally get a girlfriend after being rejected 50 times in middle school. But his reputation as a troublemaker makes most students steer clear of him. After a few incidents, Hanamichi is left with two strong feelings: "I hate basketball" and "I really need a girlfriend." Everything changes when Haruko Akagi, unaware of his bad reputation, asks him if he likes basketball. Smitten at first sight, Hanamichi eagerly says yes. She takes him to the gym and asks if he can slam dunk. Trying to impress her, he jumps-only to overshoot and smash his head into the blackboard. When Haruko tells the basketball team’s captain about Hanamichi’s incredible athleticism, he reluctantly gets pulled into the world of the sport he once despised, discovering unexpected friendships and rivalries along the way.
