A goldfish escapes from home and rides away on a jellyfish’s back. When she gets trapped in a glass jar, she washes ashore, where a five-year-old boy named Sousuke frees her. Sousuke lives with his mother, Lisa, in a seaside house while his father, Koichi, works on a fishing boat. After healing a cut on Sousuke’s finger by licking it, the goldfish is named Ponyo by her new friend. But Ponyo already has a name and a family. Her father, Fujimoto-a sorcerer who abandoned his humanity to live underwater-is desperately searching for his missing daughter, Brunhilde. When he finds and captures her, Ponyo refuses her old name and insists she wants to be human. Drawing power from Sousuke’s blood, she grows arms and legs and escapes back to the surface. However, the magic she unleashed disrupts nature, pulling the Moon closer and churning the tides into chaos. Reunited with Ponyo, Sousuke must face an ancient trial to restore balance and help her become human for good.
