In 2075, humanity has made space travel routine. Science and technology have allowed people to colonize the moon, turn outer space into a business venture, and create massive space corporations. Ai Tanabe, an optimistic young woman fascinated by the cosmos, joins Technora Corporation’s Debris Section, a team responsible for cleaning up hazardous space junk between Earth and the moon. But Ai quickly learns how little respect her job gets. The Debris Section is the company’s joke-understaffed, underfunded, and stuck using a run-down spaceship called the "Toy Box" for their missions. Despite this, Ai pushes forward, getting to know her oddball coworkers: Philippe Myers, the clumsy but kindhearted chief clerk; Edelgard Rivera, a quiet and secretive temp worker; and Hachirouta Hoshino, a hot-tempered dreamer who yearns for his own spaceship. "Planetes" is a different kind of sci-fi story, using the emptiness of space as a stage for the everyday lives of ordinary people-people born on Earth but whose ambitions reach far beyond it.
