Takeru Narihira, a troubled teenager, keeps dreaming of a world where monsters hunt him-until a mysterious girl saves him each time. After their 1,999th encounter, he vows to rescue her next. But a motorcycle crash sends him to Denji Heian-kyo, a futuristic version of Japan’s ancient capital, where he meets the girl from his dreams, Tsukimiya. She doesn’t remember him. Soon, a black mist envelops the city, turning people to stone and unleashing monstrous "oni." Only the "onmyouji"-sorcerers who control mystical "shikigami" armor-can fight them. When the mist returns, Takeru unlocks his own strange powers and resists the oni, but both he and Tsukimiya die. He wakes up in Denji Heian-kyo again, now two weeks before the mist arrives. Determined to save Tsukimiya this time, Takeru resolves to become an onmyouji and rewrite their fate.
