In the future, Earth's overpopulation has led humanity to build massive orbiting space colonies grouped into clusters called "Sides." The wealthy elite remain on Earth, forcing most people into space, sparking unrest. In Universal Century 0079, one of these clusters, Side 3, declares independence as the Principality of Zeon and wages war against the Earth Federation. Despite being outmatched in resources, Zeon gains an early advantage using towering humanoid robots called mobile suits. Their most skilled pilot is Char Aznable, a masked enigma nicknamed the "Red Comet." When Char's squad discovers the Federation secretly developing their own prototype mobile suit-the Gundam-in Side 7, they launch a devastating assault. Amuro Ray, the son of the Gundam's creator, hastily climbs into the machine and manages to repel the attack. Now caught in a personal battle with Char, Amuro escapes Side 7 aboard a Federation ship.
