This film adapts Hector Malot’s "Sans Famille," following Remi after he’s sold to Vitalis, a traveling musician who performs with a troupe of trained animals. The movie stays close to the original story but shortens it, blending musical numbers typical of Toei’s style at the time, occasional clumsy humor, and plenty of sentimental moments. The animation is fluid and well-crafted, making it a visually appealing watch, though the story leans heavily into melodrama and feels overly sentimental. A later 52-episode version by Dezaki and Sugino takes a very different approach, giving the narrative more room to develop and delivering a far more engaging experience.
