Sanpei is a carefree seven-year-old boy who lives with his grandfather in the mountains. He doesn’t pay much attention to anything except his school meals, and though his classmates tease him for looking like a kappa, he doesn’t let it bother him. One day, his school announces a swimming competition with a grand prize: a free trip to Tokyo. Sanpei decides to enter, hoping to finally visit the city and reunite with his mother, who has been working there for as long as he can remember. The problem is, Sanpei can barely swim. To improve, he sneaks off to a nearby lake to practice alone-only to be pulled underwater by a sudden current. He drowns, but instead of dying, he wakes up in the magical world of the kappa. There, he befriends a young kappa named Gartaro and begins uncovering the truth about his mother’s whereabouts-and the mystery behind his father’s disappearance.
