While exploring his grandfather's attic, Hikaru Shindou finds an old go board. When he touches it, a strange voice speaks to him, and he passes out. Waking up, he realizes the voice is still there-it’s Fujiwara no Sai, the ghost of a go master from the Heian era. Sai once taught the game to the Emperor, and his love for go is so strong that even death couldn’t stop him from playing. Now, as a spirit, he dreams of perfecting a legendary go technique no one has ever mastered, and he wants to achieve it by playing through Hikaru. Though Hikaru has no interest in board games, he goes along with Sai’s requests, making moves as directed. But everything changes when he meets Akira Touya, a talented young go player. Rivalry sparks something in Hikaru, and before long, he finds himself drawn into the world of go. His journey is only getting started.
