In the year 2011, a small fraction of humans developed psychokinetic powers called "Cantus." Over a thousand years later, in the quiet town of Kamisu 66, Saki Watanabe is the last among her friends to awaken her abilities and enroll at Sage Academy, a school for psychics like her. Though everyone there possesses Cantus, not all are equal-shortly after Saki starts attending, one of her weaker classmates vanishes without a trace. One day, while walking home with her friends-determined Maria Akizuki, sharp-witted Shun Aonuma, perceptive Satoru Asahina, and shy Mamoru Itou-Saki encounters two strange creatures called "Monster Rats." These mole-like beings revere those with Cantus as gods, so when Saki uses her powers to save one from danger, it responds with overwhelming gratitude. Unsettled by the Monster Rats' role in society, Saki and her friends soon learn of another disappearance. As they gradually piece together the truth behind these mysteries, they uncover the hidden darkness beneath their seemingly "perfect" world and the grim history of humanity.
