In the war-torn world of ancient Disboard, Riku is a young warrior driven by anger and a desperate need to save humanity. The land is ruled by the Exceed, sixteen powerful sentient species locked in a brutal conflict to crown the One True God among the Old Deus. With no laws to protect them, humanity teeters on the edge of extinction-their lack of magic and frail bodies making them easy prey for the other Exceed. But hope arrives when Riku discovers Schwi, a female Ex-Machina, in the ruins of an abandoned elf city. Cast out by her Cluster for studying human emotions, Schwi believes these feelings are the reason humanity has endured. She wants to understand the human heart. Thrown together in the midst of chaos, Riku and Schwi find in each other the answers to their own flaws. As they fight for survival, they must learn what it truly means to be human. With a powerful ally at their side, they face impossible odds to save humanity from annihilation and bring peace to Disboard.
