DARLING in the FRANXX - S01

In a future where humanity teeters on the brink of extinction, colossal creatures called Klaxosaurs have forced the last remnants of civilization to shelter in enormous fortress cities known as Plantations. Children raised in these cities are trained to operate giant mechas called FranXX-the only weapons capable of fighting the Klaxosaurs-working in pairs of one boy and one girl. These children, bred solely to pilot the machines, know nothing beyond their isolated lives and can only validate their existence by protecting their species. Hiro, once eager to become a FranXX pilot, has lost his drive after failing a critical aptitude test. Avoiding his class' graduation ceremony, he wanders to a secluded forest lake, where he meets a strange girl with two horns on her head. She calls herself Zero Two, a codename infamous among pilots-belonging to someone nicknamed the "Partner Killer." Before Hiro can make sense of the encounter, a Klaxosaur attacks the Plantation. Zero Two fights the creature in her FranXX, but the battle leaves the mecha badly damaged, sending it crashing near Hiro. With her previous partner dead, she asks Hiro to join her in the cockpit. Together, they effortlessly destroy the Klaxosaur. Though this gives Hiro a shot at redeeming his past failures, he can't shake the uneasy question: what price will he have to pay?
