In the original Japanese version, "Dairugger XV" is primarily an exploration robot and a peacekeeping force. Earth is thriving, and the president of the Terran League (called the "Galaxy Alliance" in Voltron) initiates a mission to explore beyond the galaxy. However, the starship Rugger-Guard is attacked by a vessel from the Galbeston Empire shortly after launch. To defend Earth, the super robot Dairugger is deployed. By chance, the crew also ends up aiding the people of Galbeston in their search for a new home before their planet explodes, while also freeing them from their tyrannical emperor. Unlike the U.S. adaptation, "Voltron: Defender of the Universe," this story has no connection to "King of the Beasts GoLion." Dairugger consists of three specialized assault teams: Land, Air, and Sea. Its 15 components, called "Rugger," combine to form the full robot. The design draws inspiration from rugby, as the 15 Rugger units mirror the number of players in a rugby union team. In the American version, the Galbeston Empire was renamed the "Drule Empire," and much of the violence and suggestive content was toned down for a broader audience.
