Professor Bond is conducting research on an island in the Java Sea when his son stumbles upon a giant ape and forms a friendship with him. They team up to defend Kong from the sinister Dr. Who, who has his own dark plans for the creature. Each episode featured two King Kong segments, with a "Tom of T.H.U.M.B." cartoon in between. "Tom of T.H.U.M.B." is a comedic short about a secret agent and his Asian partner. According to Animage Pocket Data Notes, MORI Yasuji and KANISHI Takao were involved as either character designers or animation directors for this portion of the show, separate from the team working on the King Kong segments. This series was the first animated TV show entirely produced in Japan specifically for American audiences. While American sources credit Rankin-Bass for commissioning the work through Videocraft International, Japanese sources list Videocraft/Toei Doga as the production company.
