Jubei Kibagami is a wandering swordsman in feudal Japan, taking odd jobs to survive. After being betrayed and left without a master, he avoids the schemes of warring factions-until fate intervenes. He rescues a female ninja named Kagero from a man whose body can turn as hard as stone. Kagero is the last of her clan, still pursuing their final mission: uncovering the truth behind a plague that destroyed a village. Jubei wants no part of it, but the stone-skinned man’s allies-a group of superhuman ninja called the Devils of Kimon-leave him little choice. Things get worse when a government agent poisons Jubei, offering the antidote only if he exposes the Devils’ true motives and their link to the plague. His investigation leads to hidden conspirators, a plot to overthrow the government, and a man from Jubei’s past he never expected to meet again.
