This story is inspired by the classic "Little Nemo" comic strips by Winsor McCay, a pioneer of animation who also created the first "Little Nemo" animated film in 1911. Originally, Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata were involved in the project but departed over "creative differences." Ray Bradbury is also believed to have left during its early development. "Little Nemo - Adventures in Slumberland" holds the distinction of being the first Japanese anime to receive a wide theatrical release in the United States.
