In the American Old West, the world's most ambitious race is set to begin. Thousands gather in San Diego to embark on a six-thousand-kilometer journey for a shot at the fifty-million-dollar grand prize. With the age of horses fading, contestants are free to use any vehicle they choose. The race demands relentless endurance, pushing riders to cover up to a hundred kilometers a day through untamed wilderness. The Steel Ball Run is unlike anything the world has seen before. Johnny Joestar, a young ex-horse racer left crippled by tragedy, arrives in San Diego to witness the race's start. There, he meets Gyro Zeppeli, a competitor who carries two steel balls at his waist instead of a gun. Johnny watches as Gyro uses one of these balls to unleash a strange power, forcing a duelist to turn his own gun on himself. When Johnny accidentally touches the steel ball, a surge of energy rushes through his legs-miraculously allowing him to stand for the first time in years. Determined to uncover the secret behind Gyro's steel balls, Johnny joins the race, setting off on a bizarre journey across America in the Steel Ball Run.
