Hundreds of years in the future, Earth's resources have dwindled, and human progress has ground to a halt. The world is now split into isolated "Units." In Unit 74, a place known as "Night Town" where all electricity shuts off at midnight, a boy named Hajiki Sanada lives with his mother and sister. The story revolves around an object called the GAD, which can reshape materials in response to the emotions of living beings. The size and form of the reconstructed objects vary based on the feelings of the person involved. When Hajiki accidentally touches a GAD, it transforms into a massive robot-a "Tekkoudo" or "Iron Giant"-which he names Lightning. But he soon discovers he isn’t the only one with a Tekkoudo, and he must figure out how to handle others like himself.
