In 2015, Dr. Yamanoue, the Secretary of the Science Ministry, builds an android robot on an artificial island, hoping to raise it as his son. However, the robot’s artificial brain has a flaw, and Dr. Yamanoue realizes he needs the help of his rival, Dr. Kawashimo, to fix it. Though the two are friends, they clash in both their personal lives and scientific work-Dr. Yamanoue is fiercely nationalistic and views the robot as a strategic weapon, while Dr. Kawashimo is a pacifist who believes in treating robots with kindness. Dr. Kawashimo arrives on the island with his young daughter, Miri, and installs the repaired brain into the robot boy, Jet Mars. Mars, newly awakened, experiences the world with innocent curiosity. The next day, he lifts Dr. Kawashimo and Miri onto a building. When he notices tears in Miri’s eyes, he feels something strange. Dr. Yamanoue explains that tears are for weak girls, not strong men. Later, another robot named Fainton malfunctions and goes on a rampage, threatening the island. After Fainton damages the facility, seawater begins flooding in. Mars stands frozen, unsure what to do-until Miri reveals her hidden abilities and seals the hole. Inspired, Mars helps by carrying materials to make repairs, saving both scientists from the flood. Mars then learns the truth: Miri is also a robot, created by Dr. Kawashimo. Through her example, Mars discovers how to cry and how to perform acts of kindness.
